How To Stain Or Paint A Fence

Tools Needed: Mower, rake, weeding tool or weed killer, drop cloth, power washer and goggles, garden hose and nozzle, bucket and scrub brush, paint scrapers, metal file, electric finishing or random orbit sander, wire brush and paint applicators.

To properly paint a fence, one must clean it first, getting rid of any leaves, grass or weeds near the fence. You may need to mow, rake, weed or spray weed killer along the base of the fence. Lay a drop cloth below the fence to catch any drippings.

Clean a wood fence and remove any loose paint with either a power washer or a hose with a power nozzle, scrub brush and a detergent/water solution. Using paint scrapers remove any remaining loose paint. Feather any raised paint edges into the adjacent areas with a power sander. To kill any mold or mildew on the wood fence; sponge on a fifty/fifty bleach-water solution on the affected areas.

To prepare a chain-link fence for painting, remove any dirt, spider webs and debris. Use a wire brush to scrape off any loose rust. Using a 50 mm nap roller, apply a rusty metal primer to the fence. Do not try to paint a vinyl-coated chain-link fence. A professional should paint that fence.

Use a roller, pad or sprayer to paint/stain large flat wooden fences. Apply paint with either an airless model of paint sprayer or a high volume low-pressure sprayer. Catch drips or work paint into some difficult areas with a brush. A stain brush holds more finish and has less drippings than a regular paint brush.

Use a 50 mm nap roller to roll paint onto a chain-link fence. Apply the paint at a 45 degree angle to the chain weave. A helper should follow the strokes with a dry roller. Paint the posts, gates and other hardware with a paint brush. Paint can also be applied to a chain-link fence with two light coats with a sprayer. Make sure to follow up with a brush.

Thin paint provides better coverage on wire fencing. Mix one pint of solvent per gallon of paint to thin the paint.

After painting/staining the fencing, wash the roller frame and pan with either paint thinner or water. This depends on the type of paint applied. Follow the manufacture’s directions to clean the spray equipment.

NOTE: When painting new wood fence material, apply alkyd exterior primer or oil based semi transparent stain. If you are painting previously alkyd painted fencing, apply acrylic latex exterior paint or acrylic solid colour stain. If you are not sure of what has previously been used on the fence, follow the procedure for new wood.

It’s just that easy!
